Court orders to freeze tax files of Nayeemul Islam, his wife

A Dhaka court today (Feb 9) ordered the seizure of tax files for Nayeemul Islam Khan, former press secretary to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and his wife, Nasima Khan Monty, in connection with corruption allegations.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib passed the order, allowing a plea from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The ruling came after a plea by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), which has already set up a two-member committee to investigate the couple’s alleged suspicious financial activities.
According to the ACC, the couple made questionable transactions involving deposits of Tk 386 crore and withdrawals of Tk 379 crore across 163 bank accounts.
The investigation is focused on their potential illegal wealth accumulation.
The court’s decision to freeze their tax files was made to ensure the proper conduct of the ongoing investigation.
