Former joint general secretary of the district farmers' party, Main Uddin, and his associates attacked villagers during the eviction drive of the municipality in Sonagazi, Feni. The attack took place at around 1:30 pm on Thursday, July 24, in Bakhria village of the municipality.
At least four people were injured in the incident. Joint forces have arrested five people with local weapons.
It is learnt that Nazia Hossain, UNO and Municipal Administrator, conducted an eviction drive for the construction of a drain in Bakhria village, Ward No. 1 of Sonagazi Municipality.
During the operation, while breaking the boundary wall of the house of Main Uddin, the joint convener of the proposed committee of the municipal BNP and former joint general secretary of the district Krishak Dal, his associates attacked him with domestic weapons under his leadership. Four people were injured in the attack. The injured are Abdul Aziz Dulal, Noman Hossain, Abidur Rahman and Liton of Bakhria village.
Upon receiving the information, members of the joint force (army-police) conducted a raid and arrested four people along with local weapons. The arrested are Mohammad Main Uddin (50), his son Nihal Ahmed Ami (20) and his associates Abdus Shukkur (50), Sohel Kamal (28) and Shahadat Hossain Mission (17).
Injured Abdul Aziz Dulal said that preparations for the case are underway.
Mainuddin's family claims that a case was filed in court under Section 145 on July 23 against the construction of a drain here. Ignoring that, the administration, along with the joint forces and the villagers, evicted them.
Sonagazi Municipal BNP member secretary Nizam Uddin said that Main Uddin has been placed as joint convener in the proposed committee of the municipal BNP. However, the incident is a family matter and the district BNP will consider the overall issue.
In this regard, District BNP Member Secretary Alal Uddin Alal said, "Main Uddin is not currently holding any position. If he commits any criminal offense, it will be tried under the prevailing laws of the country."
Sonagazi Model Police Station OC Bayezid Akon said that villagers were attacked during drain work. Four people were injured in the incident. Five people were arrested with locally made chapatis, damas and stolen goods.
