Award ceremony held in Kalia amid teachers’ voices of concern

Md. Samrat Talukdar, Kalia (Narail)

An inspiring and thought-provoking award ceremony was held on Thursday at Kalia Upazila Parishad Hall in Narail under the Performance-Based Grants for Secondary Institutions Scheme (SEDP).

The event was organized by the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education under the Ministry of Education.

The ceremony was graced by Md. Rasheduzzaman, UNO of Kalia, as the chief guest.

Special guests included Md. Abdul Mannan from the Monitoring and Evaluation Wing of DSHE, and Md. Anwar Hossain, Upazila Secondary Education Officer. Md. Mahiuddin, District Education Officer of Narail, presided over the event.

Students from various schools and madrasas, along with their guardians and teachers, attended the event. In their speeches, meritorious students credited their success to the tireless dedication of their classroom teachers. They pledged to serve the nation in the future, upholding the values of ideal citizenship.

However, the teachers' speeches reflected a blend of pride and frustration. While expressing joy over the students' achievements, they also highlighted the challenges they face—ranging from an inequitable salary structure to a lack of social recognition. One teacher remarked, “Academic brilliance alone is not enough—humanity must be nurtured too.” Citing the tragic murder of BUET student Abrar Fahad, he warned that brilliance without values can lead to destructive consequences.

A special guest echoed the need for students to become smarter and more hardworking, while also emphasizing the urgent necessity of state support and recognition for teachers. “In South Asia, Bangladeshi teachers receive the lowest remuneration. For a modern education system to thrive, we must prioritize the dignity and support of our educators,” he stated.

At the conclusion of the event, crests, certificates, and government-funded scholarships were awarded to outstanding students from various institutions. Both teachers and guardians expressed hope that such recognitions would serve as strong motivation for the students' future endeavors.
