2 killed as fire razes over 500 shanties at Ukhiya Rohingya camp

Two people, including a child, were burnt to death in a deadly fire that tore through a Rohingya camp at Kutupalong in Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar Tuesday afternoon.
More than 500 shanties along with other establishments were also gutted in the incident that left 10 to 15 more people, including the members of the Fire Service and Civil Defence, injured.
The blaze erupted at Block-D of Camp-1 west (Lambashia) around 1pm.
Ukhiya police station Officer-in-Charge Md Arif Hossain said it took nearly one and a half hours to control the fire and after that, two bodies were found.
He, however, could not confirm the reason behind the blaze.
Locals said the fire started in a shanty of the camp and spread to other shanties and establishments soon.
Six firefighting units rushed to the spot to douse the blaze. Besides, army personnel and local volunteers joined there.
Fire Service Deputy Assistant Director Md Tanharul Islam told the media that the blaze was tamed around 2:15pm and completely extinguished around 3:30pm.
The fire burnt down over 500 shanties, he said, adding that two individuals – aged 63 and 6 – died in the incident.
