A woman named Afroza Begum allegedly took her own life after locals came to know about an inappropriate relationship with her brother-in-law.
Afroza Begum, wife of Abdul Hakim of Sonalikuti village in Ward 3 of Ghogadhoh Union, Kurigram Sadar, was the mother of Happy Akhter. Happy was married to the son of Mizan, a resident of Chilkirpar village in Bhogdanga Union.
According to locals, Mizan, the father-in-law of Afroza’s daughter, used to visit Afroza’s home frequently. As Afroza’s husband Abdul Hakim and son were often away for work, Mizan allegedly developed an illicit relationship with her.
On Tuesday,Afroza took her daughter Happy Akhter and Mizan to the hospital to see a doctor. Later that night, Mizan reportedly came to Afroza’s house again. Locals allege that in the dark of night, Mizan entered Afroza’s room, and they engaged in inappropriate contact.
The incident was allegedly witnessed by Afroza’s sisters-in-law — Johura Begum, wife of her younger brother-in-law Taijuddin, and Jotsna, wife of another relative named Mohubor. Seeing them, Mizan quickly fled.
A local resident, requesting anonymity, said that after news of the incident began to spread, Afroza hanged herself late at night on Wednesday, 13 August.
Johura Begum said that the day after the incident, Afroza tried to cover it up by verbally abusing locals. But ultimately, out of shame, she hanged herself that night.
Ghogadhoh Union Parishad Chairman Abdul Malek said, “When I heard about the hanging, I informed the police.”
OC of Kurigram Sadar Police Station, Habibullah, said, no complaint has been filed.
