Yaba trader BNP worker arrested in Dohar

A drug trafficker was arrested with yaba in Dohar. The arrested individual is Shakil Ahmed (37), a resident of Maura village in Muksedpur Union of the upazila on Thursday.
Dohar Thana Police presented him before the Upazila Executive Magistrate’s Court, which sentenced him to 7 days of imprisonment without labor and a fine of 500 taka under Section 36(5) of the Narcotics Control Act, 2018.
Inspector Md. Shafiqul Alam, the Officer-in-Charge of Sainpukur Investigation Center, stated that on Wednesday afternoon, local youths caught Shakil red-handed with yaba in the Balurchar area, assaulted him, and handed him over to the Sainpukur Investigation Center police outpost. During police interrogation, Shakil identified himself as the Senior Joint Secretary of Dohar Upazila BNP’s Projonmo-71, the Office Secretary of a so-called fake organization named Dohar Upazila Press Club, and an executive member of a controversial human rights organization. Additionally, there are allegations that he used photographs with various political figures to carry out illicit activities.
Today, through the Upazila Mobile Court, he was sentenced to 7 days of imprisonment without labor and fined an additional 500 taka. “Our police operations against drugs will continue,” the officer added.
Local sources claim that Shakil, presenting himself as a follower of a local BNP leader, exerted influence in the area, regularly engaging in extortion and threatening ordinary people. Multiple complaints have been received against him at the police station, including involvement in case trading and various criminal activities.
Regarding this matter, Dr. Abdur Razzaq, General Secretary of Muksedpur Union BNP, stated that the current committee has been dissolved. Previously, Shakil was a general member of the union. He added that Dhaka District BNP President and Dohar-Nawabganj BNP guardian Khandaker Abu Ashfaq has issued clear instructions that no one involved in drug-related activities will receive any leniency or indulgence. Instead, legal action will be taken against them.
Locals allege that Shakil has long been involved in extortion, gold smuggling, and the sale of ganja and yaba, earning the nickname “Yaba Shakil” among the community. He also misled people by posing as the Office Secretary of a dubious organization called ‘Dohar Upazila Press Club’ and roamed around freely. A video of him consuming yaba has already gone viral on social media. Locals further stated, “We want a drug-free society. Therefore, we were compelled to catch him, assault him, and hand him over to the police.”
Tania Tabassum, the UNO and judge of the Mobile Court, remarked that the court has instructed Shakil to provide information through his family about others involved in the drug trade to Dohar Thana. “Our operations against drugs in Dohar will continue.”
