Dismissed SI beaten , handed over to police in Rajshahi

Rajshahi Bureau

A dismissed police sub-inspector (SI) has been handed over to the police after being beaten up in Rajshahi. The incident took place at around 11:30 pm on Saturday in the city's Hazor More area.

The name of the former SI who was beaten up is Mahbub Hasan (35). He is known as DB Hasan in Rajshahi. There are many allegations against him of harassing and intimidating innocent people and extorting money. Hasan is covered in blood as a result of the mob beating. He has injuries on his head.

Hasan studied at Rajshahi University. He was appointed as an SI in 2013. After training, he was at Motihar Police Station in Rajshahi City. Later, on September 19, 2016, he joined  DB  of the Metropolitan Police. He was very reckless from the beginning of his career. There are many allegations against him.

According to locals, Hasan was a member of the Chhatra League during his university days. Later, under the influence of the party, he took a job in the police and joined the DB to carry out repression against political opponents and ordinary people. Hasan, who considered himself 'invincible', arrested, injured and maimed numerous leaders and activists of BNP, Jamaat, Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir in Rajshahi.

He is also accused of arresting former central president of Chhatra Shibir, Manjurul Islam, and showing him arrested in a false case with weapons. He not only trapped political leaders and activists, but also ordinary people in the trap of extortion and litigation. The victims claim that he embezzled a lot of money through these misdeeds. Rajshahi journalist Rajib Ali Ratul was one such victim. He is also accused of being framed in a false case.

After the fall of the Hasina government, Ratul's father Masud Rana filed a case against this Hasan. The statement says that on October 23, 2019, the then SI Mahbub Hasan went to Masud Rana's house in the city's Railgate area in plain clothes, held a gun to his son Rajib Ali's head and took him to Shimla Bagan. Then, Masud Rana was called and told that if he did not pay five lakh taka immediately, Rajib would be put in the crossfire. When Masud Rana ran to Shimla Bagan with the money, he had to hand over the money to Hasan.

At that time, Hasan assured that Rajiv would be taken home. But the next day, he was arrested and sent to court in a case under the Narcotics Control Act. Rajiv served a long 16 months in prison in this case. After getting bail, when he met SI Hasan, Rajiv requested to return the money. Then Hasan became angry and threatened - he had joined the Chhatra League at the university, if he asked for money, he would kill him.

Mehedi Masud, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chandrima police station in the city, said, "Hasan was admitted to the hospital for treatment after his arrest. There is no case against him in our police station. Therefore, he was handed over to the Boalia police station at the hospital."

Boalia Police Station OC Abul Kalam Azad said that his police station has only one case of extortion by threatening to shoot Hasan. He will be shown arrested in that case and sent to jail. If his involvement is found in any other case later, he will be shown arrested in that case as well.

RMP  Spokesperson Police Superintendent Gaziur Rahman said, "He is currently undergoing treatment. If he is released from the medical, he will be sent to jail. There are several cases against him." He added that Hasan was in the RMP until 2021. Then he was transferred to the APBN. But he was fired for not joining the APBN for a long time.
