Workers protest in N'ganj demanding due wage
Staff Correspondent, Narayanganj
Workers of Unity Composite Mills Ltd. staged a human chain protest in front of the Narayanganj Press Club on Wednesday demanding their due wages, Eid bonuses, and all other legal dues.
Reportedly, Unity Composite Mills Ltd., a sister concern of Amana Group located in Kutubail, Fatullah, suddenly shut down last March. Since then, workers have been in a dire financial crisis without salaries, allowances, and Eid bonuses.
The protest was presided over by Unity Composite worker Jane Alam. Other speakers included Hafizul Islam, Vice President of Bangladesh Garments and Sweater Workers Trade Union Centre; M.A. Shaheen, President of the Narayanganj District Committee; Iqbal Hossain, General Secretary; Noor Islam Akhtar, Legal and Negotiation Secretary; and worker Md. Shaheen, among others.
Speakers said the factory was closed without prior notice or legal procedures. As a result, workers and their families are enduring extreme hardship. Many are unable to pay rent and are facing humiliation from landlords and shopkeepers due to unpaid debts.
Workers alleged that the factory owners are harassing them and delaying their dues. Complaints have been lodged with the Department of Factories and Establishments, but no response has been received. They also claim that the authorities are ignoring the issue.
The protestors urged immediate resolution of their crisis ahead of Eid and called on BKMEA and the government to take urgent steps. They issued an ultimatum demanding all dues and bonuses be cleared before Eid, warning of stricter movements otherwise.
