Women's safety must be ensured and equal rights must be established: Prof Banchita Chakma

A discussion meeting was held on the occasion of International Women's Day 2026 under the theme 'We want equal representation of women in politics and elections to ensure the rights and justice of women and girls.'
On Sunday morning at 10 am, a program organized jointly by the Zilla Parishad, the Citizen Awareness Committee and Pro Better Life PBL was held at the Zilla Parishad Annex Building. The program was chaired by Zilla Parishad member Dev Prasad Dewan, Rangamati President of the Citizen Awareness Committee (CANC), Professor Banchita Chakma, was the chief guest.
Professor Banchita Chakma said, ensuring women's safety and accepting women as citizens in society is of paramount importance. Only when women's safety is ensured will it be possible to establish other rights, including equal rights.'
She also said, 'In a patriarchal society, women are controlled by men and that is from the family. Initiative and empowerment are needed to establish women in society. Women's work needs to be properly recognized in every field.
District Council Member Dev Prasad Dewan said that Women's Day is not just a day of celebration; it is a social movement. He urged everyone to come out of the trend of keeping women behind.
Speaking at the event, YES member Nisha Chakma, PBL representative Nuku Chakma, District Council Member Adv. Lutfunnesa Begum Bithi, WEAVE Executive Director and Rangamati District Council Member Nai U Pru Marma Meri, District Council Member Vaishali Chakma, SANAK member Anjulika Khisa, among others.
