Woman burnt to death, one held in Narayanganj

A woman was burnt to death as a local Awami League leader’s son allegedly set her house on fire following a dispute over a piece of land in Rupganj area of Narayanganj on Monday.
Beauty Begum, 50, a resident of the Bhaktabari area, admitted to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery with 75% of burn injuries, died around 10pm, Tariqul Islam, residential physician of the hospital, told the Daily Sun.
Her daughter Shimu Akhter said she also sustained burns injuries in the incident.
A group of miscreants led by Zakibur Rahman Jewel, son of Habibur Rahman Hares, former vice chairman of Rupganj Upazila Parishad also organising secretary of the upazila unit Awami League, equipped with sharp weapons, attacked their house.
At one stage, they set the house on fire by throwing petrol, leaving her mother critically injured with the burns, Shimu Akhter said.
As her condition deteriorated, she was taken to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery where she breathed her last around 10pm, she said.
Meanwhile, the victim’s husband Kamal Hossain lodged a murder case with Rupganj Police Station and police arrested Zakibur Rahman in this connection.
Jubayer Rahman, inspector (investigation) of the police station, also investigation officer of the case, said they have already netted on Jewel and they are now probing the matter.
