Widespread clashes erupt between students, police in capital

Staff Correspondent

Students protesting for quota reform and police have engaged in chases and counter-chases during the pre-announced ‘complete shutdown’ at several places in the capital on Thursday.

Widespread clashes erupted in Jatrabari, Shanir Akhra, Arambag, Rampura, Merul Badda, Pragati Sarani, Mirpur, Uttara, and Uttara until 12:30 pm.

An 18-year-old boy was reportedly killed during a clash between quota-reform protesters and riot police in Jatrabari area, hospital sources said on Thursday.

Police attacked agitating students of BRAC University while they were staging a demonstration and chanting slogans in front of their campus in the capital’s Merul Badda area.

At one stage, students entered the university campus, and police followed them, using batons and tear gas inside the campus, reports our correspondent.

Several students were injured in the incident.

In Uttara, students demanding quota system reform from several universities and colleges took to the streets in front of Zamzam Tower.

Protest of the students turned violent when police intervened to disperse them, leading to clashes.

To bring the situation under control, police lobbed tear gas multiple times. Protesters then vandalised a police box and two buses.
