Violence at Ctg court: 29 more people sued

Chattogram Bureau

Another case has been filed against 29 people over clashes between law enforcers on one hand, and followers of Hindu priest Chinmoy Krishna Das and others on the other hand, on Chattogram metropolitan court premises last week that left a lawyer dead.

Pro-Awami League think tank Suchinta Foundation's leader Jinnat Sohana Chowdhury is among those accused in the case.

One Mohammad Ullah Chowdhury filed the case on Wednesday morning, said Kotwali police station’s Officer-in-Charge Abdul Karim.

With this, a total of six cases have so far been filed over the clash.

In the latest case, twenty nine people were named and 40 to 50 were unidentified ones, the OC said.

Some of them were identified as former Chittagong City Corporation’s ward councillors Jahar Lal Hazari and Shaibal Das Suman, Mohila Jubo League port city unit leader Jinnat as well as banned Chhatra League leaders Shuvo Kanti Das, Mithun, Bijoy and Samir Kanti Dey.

According to the case statement, the accused financed the attack that left lawyer Saiful Islam Alif dead and several others injured.

Among the other cases, slain Saiful’s father and brother filed two separate murder cases and police lodged three.

On 26 November, lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was hacked to death when controversial leader Chinmoy Krishna Das’ supporters went on a rampage to forcibly release him from police custody, violating court orders.

Shortly before the clash broke out, the court had sent Chinmoy to jail in a sedition case.
