Barlekha Thana police arrested Abdul Hakim (50) and his wife Achma Begum (45), the chairman of a private company called Village Development Network (VDN), who have alkegedly misappropriated huge money from customers of different upazilas of Sylhet, including Barlekha of Moulvibazar, for almost 6 years.

They were arrested from Majortila Nurpur area of Sylhet's Shahporan police station early on Tuesday morning. Barlekha police sent them to jail through the court on Wednesday afternoon. Abdul Hakim is the son of Rustam Ali of West Hatlia village of Dakshinbhag (South) Union of Barlekha Upazila.

According to the police, Abdul Hakim is an absconding accused who has a total of 13 warrants and a warrant for 10 cases including check forgery from Barlekha police station. His wife Achma Begum has a conviction warrant for two cases. They were absconding since the court verdict. Under the direction of Moulvibazar Police Superintendent Manjur Rahman PPM Bar, on the basis of secret information a group of police led by ASI Md. Abu Taleb of Barlekha police station arrested Abdul Hakim and his wife Achma Begum in Majortila Nurpur area of Sylhet Shahporan police station on Wednesday morning.

It has been reported that the private organization called Village Development Network (VDN) extorted Tk 15 to 20 crore as deposits from customers through various packages from 2003 to early 2017. At the maturity of that deposit, the customer is expected to pay more than 50 crore taka including dividends. But it is far from giving profit to the customers, in the middle of 2017, the top officials including Chairman Abdul Hakim, MD Ayaz Ali disappeared along with the capital. When the matter was published in the media, the victims filed a case against them in various courts.

Barlekha Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Yardous Hasan said that the accused Abdul Hakim and his wife, who have a total of 15 warrants including 12 punishment warrants, have been arrested from Majortila Nurpur area of Sylhet Shahporan police station. They hid for a long time. They were sent to jail by the court on Wednesday afternoon.
