In Karpasha Chak, adjacent to Goalimandra in Haldia Union of Louhajang Upazila, Munshiganj, pockets are being created for ponds by cutting soil from fertile farmland.

Allegations have surfaced that approximately two acres of land, along with freshly planted green paddy plants, are being excavated.

Upon visiting the site yesterday, it was observed that a large excavator was being used to dig deep pits by cutting through the paddy fields. Local residents complained that even though the land is suitable for agriculture, ponds and pockets are being forcibly excavated. Speaking to the excavator operator, he stated that a large garment factory would be built nearby, and the landowner himself was having the soil removed for this purpose.

Meanwhile, several local residents, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that Haji Matiur Rahman was cutting soil from his own land to fill the area for the construction of a garment factory. However, they fear that if agricultural land continues to be destroyed in this manner, agricultural production will be severely affected.

Repeated attempts to contact the landowner, Haji Matiur Rahman, for his statement were unsuccessful.

On the other hand, locals claim that illegal excavation of fertile farmland is reducing agricultural land, which could have severe long-term consequences for agriculture and the environment. They demand stricter measures from the administration to stop such activities. Otherwise, if land continues to decrease this way, food production will decline, eventually leading the country towards a food crisis.

Louhajang UNO Mohammad Nesar Uddin said, “Excavating soil from agricultural land is completely prohibited. We have taken note of the issue and will take necessary actions promptly.”
