In Bilirband village of Zakiganj Municipality, Sylhet, a civil court has issued show-cause notices to UNO Md. Mahbubur Rahman, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Pronoy Biswas, and two others in connection with the demolition of a privately-owned boundary wall for road construction.
In a civil case filed by a man named Enam Uddin, it was alleged that on September 24, the boundary wall of his house was demolished under administrative orders without any prior written notice. Later, on September 28, a notice delivered through a guard at Azizia Community Center mentioned a verbal directive regarding the incident.
Plaintiff Enam Uddin said, “I had expected justice from the administration. But demolishing the wall without any written notice and later issuing threats shocked us. A local individual further damaged the wall at night, even though an alternative road already exists in the area.”
Following the complaint, the Assistant Judge’s Court directed UNO Md. Mahbubur Rahman, AC (Land) Pronoy Biswas, local resident Liton Ahmed, and his wife Jesmin Begum to explain their actions within 15 days.
Plaintiff’s lawyer Adv Md. Parvez Ahmed said, “We are relying on the legal process as per the court’s direction. We hope justice will prevail.”
Meanwhile, AC (Land) Pronoy Biswas said, “The wall was demolished as per verbal instructions from higher authorities. I haven’t received the show-cause notice yet, but I will respond accordingly once I do.”
Zakiganj UNO Md. Mahbubur Rahman said, “The matter falls under the jurisdiction of the municipality, so the municipal authority is the appropriate body to explain the details.”
The incident has sparked widespread discussion in the local area. Residents have alleged that constructing a road by demolishing private property is unlawful. They have demanded a proper investigation and justice in this matter.
