Uncertainty, debt : Farmer Akter Hossain dies unable to bear loss of his ripe paddy due to flash flood

 A Z Al Muzahid, Kishoreganj

A pall of gloom has descended upon the haor regions of Austagram in Kishoreganj. However, this mourning is not just for the lost crops, but for Akter Hossain (60), a farmer who had cultivated his land with a chest full of dreams. On Saturday (May 2) evening, after witnessing his sweat-drenched, ripe paddy fields submerge under flash flood waters from the hills, he suffered a fatal heart attack and passed away.Akter Hossain, a resident of Alinagar Pashchim Para in the Deoghar Union of Austagram Upazila, had cultivated Boro paddy on 3 acres of land by taking a loan of approximately 150,000 BDT. This golden harvest was the sole hope for his family’s solvency and for repaying his debts. But within moments, heavy rainfall over the past few days and the onrush of water from upstream turned those dreams into despair. On Saturday afternoon, Akter Hossain could not bear the sight of his paddy fields sinking underwater. Seeing his well-nurtured dreams wash away before his eyes, he fell ill right there in the field. Although relatives rescued him and rushed him to the Upazila Health Complex, he could not be saved. Doctors declared him dead towards the evening.Expressing their reactions, local residents and conscious citizens said that Akter Hossain's death is a deeply heartbreaking incident. For a farmer, his crop is not just a livelihood but a dream to live for. To see that dream submerge before one’s eyes is an unbearable agony.Another helpless farmer from Deoghar Union, Md. Shamsuddin, shared his plight with the country today representative: "I had cultivated some land to provide food for my family for the entire year; that land is now underwater too. I don't understand what we will eat or how we will survive in the days ahead."Due to labor shortages and transportation disruptions, many farmers are unable to bring their harvested paddy home. Between nature’s fury on one side and the burden of debt on the other, thousands of farmer families in the haor region are now distraught. Akter Hossain’s death is not just a statistic; it is a tragic and silent cry of the farmers' back-breaking labor.

The untimely death of Akter Hossain serves as a tragic reflection of the extreme helplessness of haor farmers and their defeat against nature. According to data from the District Agricultural Department, the haor’s agricultural system is facing a catastrophic disaster due to the ongoing calamity. Last Saturday alone, an additional 2,000 hectares of Boro paddy land were submerged, bringing the total affected land in the district to 9,045 hectares. The extent of the damage is most severe in the Itna and Austagram Upazilas.Caught between a shortage of laborers and transport issues, and the rapidly rising water levels, farmers are spending their days in extreme uncertainty about securing their year’s food supply. Akter Hossain’s loss of life is a silent lament of a farmer crushed under the weight of that uncertainty and debt.
