Two members of mugging, extortion gang arrested in Sonagazi

Two members of an organized mugging and extortion gang were arrested by Sonagazi Model Police on Friday night during a raid in Amirabad Union of Sonagazi upazila, Feni. The arrestees are Sifat (25), son of Md. Hamid of Sonapur, and Omar Faruk alias Mister, son of Belayet Hossain. Police stated that the duo is part of a gang involved in mugging and extortion in the area for a long time.According to the case details, on April 29, an eighth-grade schoolgirl from Matiganj went on an outing to the Muhuri Project with three friends. Around 2 PM at a place called Dasgram, the accused stopped their rickshaw, forced her friends to leave, and brought in an unknown boy, falsely accusing the girl of inappropriate behavior. They then harassed and intimidated her, demanding 1 lakh taka in extortion from her family. The family agreed to pay 20,000 taka, and 13,000 was paid initially. However, when the remaining amount wasn’t paid, the gang attacked and assaulted her relatives at her grandfather’s house on April 30 and May 1.Following this, the girl’s father, Abdullah alias Babul, filed a case naming seven individuals, including the two arrested. Acting on the complaint, police conducted a raid and arrested the two accused.Sonagazi Model Police Station OC Bayezid Akon confirmed the arrests and said that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining members of the gang.
