Tulip Siddiq steps down as Treasury minister
International Desk
Tulip Siddiq has stepped down from her role as Treasury minister following scrutiny over her financial connections to the former Bangladeshi government led by her aunt, Sheikh Hasina.
Siddiq, who served as the City and anti-corruption minister, was not found to have violated any rules by Laurie Magnus, the adviser on ministerial standards.
However, Magnus recommended that Prime Minister Keir Starmer consider the reputational risks linked to Siddiq’s family ties with the ousted Bangladesh leadership. In his advice, Magnus suggested that Siddiq should have been more mindful of these risks.
In her resignation statement on Tuesday, Siddiq insisted that she had fully disclosed all her financial interests and relationships. However, she acknowledged that the controversy had become a distraction for the government.
Earlier this month, she had referred herself to Starmer's adviser after it was revealed she had lived in properties linked to individuals associated with her aunt, Sheikh Hasina, who resigned last year after a popular uprising in Bangladesh.
These properties included a two-bedroom flat near King’s Cross and a separate house in Hampstead.
