A torch lighting program was held in Sundarganj, Gaibandha, demanding the implementation of the Teesta Master Plan and protection of the Teesta River.

The program was held on the banks of the Teesta River in the Maulana Bhashani Bridge area of the upazila on Thursday evening.

The program was organized by the Sundarganj Upazila Teesta River Protection Movement under the guidance of Principal Asadul Habib Dulu, the chief coordinator of the movement to protect the Teesta River, former minister and BNP's Rangpur divisional organizing secretary.

The program at the southern end of Maulana Bhashani Bridge was led by Upazila BNP member secretary and one of the leaders of the movement, Mahmudul Islam Pramanik Mahmud. Upazila BNP joint convener Ashek Ali BSC, Shahadat Hossain Selim, Abdul Latif Bablu, F. I. Jahangir Mandal, Azizar Rahman, Musa Kalimullah, Taslim Uddin Bablu, Asaduzzaman Khandaker Masud, Matiar Parvez, Abu Taher Alam, Iktiar Mamun, Bablu Mandal member, Abdur Rahim and Upazila Jubo Dal convener Abdur Rahman, along with BNP and its affiliated organizations' leaders and activists.

Upazila BNP member secretary Mahmudul Islam Pramanik Mahmud said, 'On the instructions of Principal Asadul Habib Dulu Sir, we have been running a movement for a long time to alleviate the suffering of the people on the banks of the Teesta. The speedy implementation of the Teesta Master Plan is the demand of the hour. Our lives and livelihoods have been disrupted due to river erosion, floods and water inequality. Therefore, the work on the project must start during the interim government. We have lit this torch to attract the government's attention. If our demands are not met, more stringent programs will be implemented.
