Tax lawyers need strong regulating body: Law minister

Staff Correspondent

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq said the tax lawyers make important contributions to collection of revenue of the country.

The tax lawyers need a strong regulatory body so that outsiders cannot enter the profession, he opined.

Anisul Huq expressed the view during a meeting with delegation of taxes lawyers at the law ministry on Tuesday.
He suggested leaders of the various taxes lawyers’ associations to work for boosting professional standard of its members.

Any hike in processional stand will add value to the lawyers and help increase revenue collection of the country, he said.

Law minister also assured the delegation of providing modern books for the library of the tax lawyers’ association.

The delegates requested the minister to take step to amend Income Tax Ordinance for forming Tax Council in line with Bangladesh Bar Council to ensure a strong regulating body for them.

They also demanded induction of a judicial officer of the rank of district judge and a tax lawyer to the Taxes Appellate Tribunals and constitution of two full benches of such tribunal in Chattogram.

Anisul Huq said he will discuss the issues with relevant authorities and take necessary steps in this regard.

Law and justice division secretary Md Golam Sarwar was also present at the meeting with delegation comprising Bangladesh Tax Lawyers Association president President Sohrab Uddin, secretary general Md Khurshed Alam, former president Syed Iqbal Mostafa, AKM Azizur Rahman, Dhaka Taxes Bar Association president Abu Amzad, general secretary Md Zakaria Khan and former social welfare secretary Mamunur Rashid.
