Sustainable Tourism Industry: Bangladesh's Potential and Challenges
Progga Das
Tourism is not just an industry; it is a powerful force that intertwines the economy, culture, environment, and diplomacy, presenting a nation to the world with a new identity. It holds the key to an economic revolution. Bangladesh’s tourism sector is a dormant potential, yet harnessing this requires the proper implementation of sustainable tourism policies.Sustainable tourism refers to a system that ensures the development of the tourism industry while maintaining a balance between the environment, society, and economy. For a developing country like Bangladesh, sustainable tourism is crucial as it preserves local resources and ensures long-term development. Through sustainable tourism, it is possible to improve the standard of living for local communities, alleviate poverty, and protect the environment.Nature has bestowed Bangladesh with its full spectrum of beauty. The world’s longest sea beach in Cox’s Bazar, the mystique of the Sundarbans, the colorful hills of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, the lush green tea gardens of Sylhet, and the newly emerging river islands on the Padma each element adds to an unparalleled diversity. As a riverine country, every bend of Bangladesh’s rivers holds new opportunities for tourism. However, if this beauty remains merely a picturesque backdrop, it will not contribute to economic development.Another invaluable treasure of Bangladesh’s tourism is its heritage. The ruins of Mahasthangarh, the Buddhist monastery of Paharpur, the architectural marvel of the Sixty Dome Mosque, and the silent history of Panam City and each of these is a vast tourism asset. These landmarks are not just historical relics; they are the most powerful tools for branding the country. Yet, for generations, they have been left in neglect and decay.Tourism is the only industry where natural and historical resources can be commercialized to create extensive employment and revenue. However, in Bangladesh, mismanagement in policymaking, lack of enthusiasm, weak planning, and rising crime have kept the tourism industry stagnant. If potential is not translated into reality, this industry will remain an illusion. Hence, immediate and effective measures must be taken to capitalize on this immense opportunity. A sustainable tourism policy is the only viable solution. One of the primary requirements of sustainable tourism is a safe environment. Unfortunately, in Bangladesh, incidents of fraud, extortion, harassment, and even direct criminal activities against tourists occur regularly. There is no effective policy to ensure the safety of tourists. Attracting foreign tourists requires prioritizing their security. Without coordinated efforts from law enforcement, a tourist-friendly policing system, and a strict legal framework, this sector will lose its potential. Thus, the highest level of security must be ensured in every tourist area. Exclusive Tourist Security Units should be established in all major tourist spots, dedicated solely to tourist safety. Fraud, harassment, extortion, and forced transactions must be eradicated. A 24/7 helpline should be launched for tourists. Moreover, the foundation of tourism lies in transportation, accommodation, and service quality. Yet, in Bangladesh, reaching most tourist destinations is a nightmare. Transportation in hilly regions is dangerous, there are no effective safety measures for tourists on sea beaches, and even urban areas lack proper signposting and guidance. Unplanned hotels, traffic congestion, inadequate facilities, and illegal encroachments have turned tourism into a chaotic system. To resolve these issues, roads and infrastructure in tourist areas must be improved, modern accommodation facilities should be established, and international-standard transport services should be ensured.Investment in the tourism sector must be increased. Luxurious hotels, state-of-the-art resorts, and eco-tourism spots should be developed through public-private partnerships. At the same time, measures must be taken to preserve natural and cultural heritage. To maintain environmental sustainability, plastic bans should be enforced, illegal encroachments removed, and proper maintenance of tourist areas ensured. Tourism Special Economic Zones should be established. The visa-on-arrival process for foreign tourists should be simplified. Additionally, smart tourism services can be introduced to enhance the travel experience of foreign visitors, encouraging them to explore various destinations in Bangladesh.Tourism should be integrated with local culture and lifestyle so that local communities also benefit. Administrative corruption must be eliminated, and efficient management should be ensured. Transparency and competency standards in the tourism sector must be maintained. However, the most crucial aspect is promoting Bangladesh’s tourism globally through international branding. Digital marketing and tourism expos can serve this purpose. Additionally, increasing promotional campaigns for Bangladesh tourism on platforms like Google, Facebook, and YouTube should be prioritized. Travel bloggers and influencers should be invited, and social media campaigns should be launched to establish Bangladesh as a global tourism brand. This will not only introduce the world to Bangladesh’s tourist destinations, history, and heritage but also enhance the country’s global reputation. If Bangladesh’s tourism industry progresses with proper planning, security, infrastructure development, and international marketing, it could become a leading source of foreign revenue. The development of this industry will ensure not just economic growth but also employment generation, cultural enrichment, and international recognition. The time has come to transform Bangladesh into one of the world’s most attractive tourist destinations. This is achievable only through visionary planning and execution. With the coordinated efforts of government, private institutions, and all sectors of society, Bangladesh can emerge as an unstoppable force in global tourism, making tourism a driving force for national development.the writer is a student of deprtmen of Economics of Eden Mohila college .She can be reached at proggadas2005@gmail.com
