State Minister inaugurates Buruli Canal re-excavation project in Bhabadah to resolve waterlogging

Joydev Chakraborty, Keshabpur (Jashore)

Anindya Islam Amit, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, said, "The canal excavation program was started by the hands of martyred President Ziaur Rahman. The program later brought a revolution in agriculture. The people of Bangladesh were deprived of this canal excavation program outside the time of martyred President Ziaur Rahman's martyrdom or the time when national leader Begum Khaleda Zia was the head of government. Only because of political narrow-mindedness; because if the canal is cut, the image of Ziaur Rahman will surface in front of the people. Only because of that small-mindedness, because of narrow-mindedness, even though the subsequent governments understood it, they did not continue this canal excavation program because they believed in a different political philosophy.

This has harmed the people of Bangladesh. As promised by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the canal excavation program has started in the country, thinking about the people, as promised by BNP after it came to power."

He said these  while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of the three-kilometer re-excavation work of the Buruli Canal in Keshabpur Upazila of Jashire on Saturday morning.

In his speech as the chief guest, State Minister Amit further said, 'The government wants to find a permanent solution to the suffering and hardship of the people of this region. To remove the waterlogging in this region, the work of re-excavating 81.50 kilometers of rivers is underway. At the same time, the work of re-excavating the existing 21 internal canals in Bhabadah area is underway.

The inauguration ceremony, presided over by Jashore  Deputy Commissioner Ashek Hasan, was attended by Lieutenant Colonel Mamunur Rashid, Project Director of the Waterlogging Relief Project, Jessore Superintendent of Police Syed Rafiqul Islam, Jessore District BNP President Advocate Syed Saberul Haque Sabu, District Council Administrator Delwar Hossain Khokon, Keshabpur Upazila BNP President Abul Hossain Azad, Water Development Board Executive Engineer Palash Banerjee, Lecturer Julmat Ali, MA Alim, and others.

After the discussion, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit inaugurated the re-excavation work of Buruli Canal by cutting the soil. Once the re-excavation work of Buruli Canal is completed, the water of Buruli, Pathara, Panjia, Chuadanga and Krishnanagar Beel of the upazila will be able to be easily drained into the Aparbhadra River. As the canal was filled with silt, the water in that area could not be drained and farmers were deprived of crop production due to waterlogging.
