Speeding motorcycle leaves AL leader dead in Gopalganj

A local Awami League (AL) leader was killed after being hit by a speeding motorcycle on the Dhaka-Khulna highway in Gopalganj Sadar upazila on Friday night.

Deceased Ranjit Kumar Barai Gama, 70, vice-president of Gopalganj Awami League and also special public prosecutor of District Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal, was son of Kalipad Barai and a resident of Rupahati village under Tungipara upazila in the district.

Quoting locals Bhatipara Highway Police Station's inspector Md Abul Hashem said, Ranjit Kumar went to Mandartola area of the upazila to visit the college established by him which is under-construction right now. Later, a speeding motorbike hit the AL leader at around 5pm on Friday on the way back home from the college, leaving him critically injured.

He was rescued and taken to Gopalganj General Hospital where the physicians referred him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. But he succumbed to his injuries around 8pm on the way to the hospital.

Gopalganj Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge Mohammad Anisur Rahman said the body was kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy and legal actions would be taken further.
