Renowned Ekushey Padak recipient and Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra artiste Shujeo Shyam passed away at a hospital in Dhaka early Friday. He was 78.
Shujeo Shyam breathed his last around 2:50am while undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), her daughter Rupa Manjuri Shyam told the media.
The noted singer, composer, and music director had been suffering from cancer since 2018 while a pacemaker had been implanted in his heart in June this year, she said.
“As his physical condition worsened on 24 September, he was admitted to BSMMU,” she added.
Shujeo Shyam composed the tune for the final song broadcast by Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra and the first song after the surrender of the Pakistani occupation forces. He directed and composed the iconic “Bijoy Nishan Urchhe Oi,” with lyrics by Shahidul Amin and vocals by Ajit Roy.
His notable compositions include “Rokto Diye Naam Likhechi,” “Rokto Chai Rokto Chai,” “Aha Dhonno Amar Jonmobhumi,” and “Ayre Chashi Mojur Kuli,” among many others.
