Shakib has no bar to play farewell test in Mirpur: Asif

Shakib Al Hasan's hopes of playing a farewell Test match in home against South Africa have received a significant boost, as sports adviser Asif Mahmud expressed confidence that there should be no legal obstacles preventing the all-rounder from returning to Bangladesh for the game.

The match is set to take place in Dhaka on October 21.

Speaking at a press conference held at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Sunday, Mahmud addressed concerns over Shakib's involvement in a murder case following the death of a person during the July uprising. Despite this legal complication, Mahmud suggested that the path for Shakib to play his farewell Test is now clearer.

"There should not be any obstacle in him coming or leaving the country. That is as far as I know. The law ministry can clarify the legal aspect, but I don't see any major hurdle," Asif said, adding that he had been in communication with the ministry of law.

He further explained, "Asif Nazrul has already indicated that if Shakib's involvement is not established during the preliminary investigation, his name will be removed from the case."

Shakib has been under public scrutiny after being linked to the July protests. In response, he issued an apology on social media for remaining silent during the political unrest, while calling on the people of Bangladesh to support him in his final match.

Asif also addressed concerns over public sentiment regarding Shakib's political ties. "There may be an emotional reaction from the public due to Shakib's association with the former government, which some see as oppressive. However, he has clarified his stance, and I believe there is a place for passion and forgiveness."

Despite assurances, protests have been reported near the Mirpur stadium in the last two days, with some people voicing opposition to Shakib's return. Nevertheless, Mahmud emphasized that the state has a duty to ensure the safety of all citizens, including the national cricket team.

With growing support from key officials, it seems increasingly likely that Shakib will be able to conclude his career on home soil, surrounded by fans in what promises to be an emotional farewell.
