Shaheed Zia first called for 'Green Revolution' in country: Environment Minister Mintoo
Staff Correspondent
Environment Minister Abdul Awwal Mintoo has said that Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman initiated the country's first "Green Revolution" through rural economic development, canal digging programs, and extensive tree plantation drives.
Speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of a month-long tree plantation campaign for the Dhaka-18 constituency at Nawab Habibullah School and College in Uttara on Thursday , Mintoo noted that late Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia later popularized the national campaign by personally planting saplings in 1991 and initiating the National Tree Fair in 1994.
He urged every family and youth group to plant and nurture at least one tree, expressing optimism that the national target of 27 percent tree cover by 2035 can be achieved ahead of schedule.
Special guest and State Minister for Youth and Sports Md. Aminul Huq emphasized the ecological importance of trees, calling for proper care of saplings to fulfill the government's pledge of planting 25 crore trees over five years.
Presided over by Dhaka-18 MP SM Jahangir Hossain, the event concluded with guests planting fruit-bearing, timber, and medicinal saplings to formally kick off the constituency-wide campaign.
