Shadman’s century lifts Bangladesh, but late collapse hands Zimbabwe hope
Sports Desk
Bangladesh appeared in control for much of the second day of the Chattogram Test thanks to a century from Shadman Islam, but late wickets handed Zimbabwe a way back as the hosts closed on 291 for 7, leading by just 64 runs.
Shadman starred with a fluent 120, marking his second Test hundred and his first at home.
He shared a century opening stand with Anamul Haque (39), giving Bangladesh their first 100-plus opening partnership in 33 innings.
Mominul Haque (33) also chipped in with a steady hand as Bangladesh built a strong platform. However, a series of poor decisions and a disciplined Zimbabwean bowling effort derailed Bangladesh's progress.
Debutant leg-spinner Vincent Masekesa was the best bowler with 3 for 44, including the crucial wickets of Najmul Hossain Shanto, Jaker Ali, and Nayeem Hasan.
Brian Bennett also struck with the key dismissal of Shadman. Mushfiqur Rahim (40) was run out needlessly, adding to Bangladesh’s frustrations.
From a commanding 259 for 3, Bangladesh slipped to 291 for 7 by stumps.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz (16*) and Taijul Islam (5*) will resume on Day 3, with the hosts hoping to stretch the lead beyond 100.
Earlier in the morning, Taijul Islam wrapped up Zimbabwe’s first innings with a six-wicket haul, as the visitors were bowled out for 227, deciding to bat first after winning the toss.//
