Seminar on climate change and southern agriculture held in Khulna

A seminar titled 'Climate Change and Southern Agriculture' was held in the conference room of the Khulna Agricultural Information Service Regional Office on Friday.
The chief guest at the seminar was Seed Certification Agency Khulna Regional Seed Certification Officer Bibas Chandra Saha.
The seminar was chaired by Agriculture Information Service Chief Information Officer BM Rashedul Alam.
SM Ferdous. Kazi Jahangir Hossain, Principal of the Agricultural Training Institute, spoke as the guest on the occasion. Sharmina Shamim, Regional Wireless Agriculture Officer of the Agricultural Information Service. Deputy Director of Khulna Agricultural Extension Department Md. Nazrul Islam, Khulna Agricultural Zone & Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni spoke at the seminar.
On the occasion, the guests said that climate change was causing huge damage of crops in the southern part of the country which is a major threat to the agriculture sector. Agricultural sector plays a major role in economic development in the country. Every year about 5 hectares of cultivable land is becoming unabated.
In addition to agriculture, fisheries, livestock farming and other alternative livelihoods should be created. Farmers need to be aware of the use of technology. Database needs to be created in food production so that farmers can easily understand which product is to produce more. Sustainable coastal dams need to be constructed to protect agricultural land from cyclones and tides. They also said that the country is moving forward in agriculture. In order to get more forward, new technology needs to be discovered.
At the seminar, the presenter said that the production of coastal agriculture could decrease by 5 to 5 percent by 20. Paddy production in Bangladesh will decrease by 5 percent and wheat production will be reduced to 12 percent.
On the occasion, six upazila agriculture officers of six upazilas of Khulna Division capable of customering of agricultural talk were given certificates and two honors crests.
