Garment workers and police locked into a clash in the Jamgora area of Ashulia on Saturday morning, leaving a van driver injured.
Witnesses said workers of several ready-made garment factories started gathering in the Chhoytola area on Tongi-Ashulia-EPZ Road this morning, demanding an increase in their wages.
As the workers pelted brick chips at the factories, the police chased and removed them from the road. Agitating workers also then pelted brick chips at the law enforcers from lanes, while the police fired at them.
Van driver Amirul Islam sustained bullet wounds in the clash and was admitted to a local hospital.
Dhaka district Detective Branch of police (North) Officer-in-Charge Riaz Uddin Ahmed Biplob said, “When the workers tried to take to the streets, they were dispersed. We fired rubber bullets without targeting anyone.”
Mahmud Naser Johny, additional superintendent of Ashulia Industrial Police-1, said the workers gave their attendance after the factories opened in Ashulia this morning, and gathered on the streets. The clash erupted as the police went to clear the road, he added.
