Rising Skin Problems in Extreme Heat: Awareness and Prevention Are the Need of the Hour

Dr. Muhammad Mahtab Hossain Mazed

With the arrival of summer, the prevalence of skin diseases increases significantly. Rising temperatures, excessive sweating, and high humidity disrupt the natural balance of the skin and create a favorable environment for infections. As a result, even minor itching or rashes can develop into serious skin conditions. In many cases, negligence or delayed treatment leads to complications, which may also negatively affect other organs of the body. Therefore, awareness about skin diseases during the hot season is important.
Why Do Skin Diseases Increase in Summer?
Excessive sweating blocks skin pores
Humid conditions keep the skin wet for prolonged periods, increasing infection risk
Rapid growth of fungi and bacteria
Ultraviolet rays damage skin cells
Poor hygiene and prolonged use of sweat-soaked clothes
Tight and synthetic clothing restricts airflow
Dust and environmental pollution weaken skin immunity
Common Symptoms
Intense itching
Red spots or rashes
Burning sensation
Small bumps or heat rash
Skin peeling
Fluid-filled blisters
Pain, pus, or swelling in affected areas
Common Summer Skin Diseases
Heat rash (Miliaria): Blocked sweat ducts cause small bumps, common in children
Fungal infections (Ringworm): Common in groin, armpits, and neck with severe itching
Bacterial infections: Boils, impetigo with pus and pain
Allergic dermatitis: Caused by chemicals, cosmetics, or fabrics
Sunburn: Skin becomes red and sensitive due to excessive sun exposure
Acne: Increases due to overactive oil glands
Scabies: A contagious parasitic skin disease
Possible Complications if Neglected
Spread of infection to other parts of the body
Secondary infections due to scratching
Permanent scars or pigmentation
Deep infections like cellulitis
Blood infection (sepsis)
Mental stress and loss of confidence
Diagnostic Methods
Clinical examination of the skin
Skin scraping to detect fungal infection
Bacterial culture tests
Allergy tests when necessary
Diseases That May Worsen Due to Skin Conditions
Increased complications in diabetic patients with delayed wound healing
Higher tendency for asthma or breathing problems from allergies
Blood infections (sepsis) through skin lesions
Lymphatic infections (lymphangitis, lymphedema)
Bone and joint infections in severe cases
Kidney inflammation (glomerulonephritis)
Risk of rheumatic fever in children
Weakened immunity and increased susceptibility to infections
Eye problems (conjunctivitis, itching) from facial infections
Sleep disturbance and mental stress due to severe itching
Malnutrition in children
Discomfort in marital life due to genital infections
Rare risk of cancer in long-term neglected cases
Dehydration and electrolyte imbalance from extensive skin damage
Social discomfort, anxiety, and depression
Preventive Measures
Take regular baths and maintain hygiene
Wipe off sweat promptly
Wear loose, cotton clothing
Change wet clothes quickly
Avoid excessive sun exposure and take protection
Use personal items (towels, clothes) separately
Keep skin clean and dry
Avoid unnecessary chemicals or cosmetics
Do not self-medicate; consult a doctor
Seek medical advice promptly if symptoms appear
Homeopathic Approach
The principle of homeopathy is to treat the patient, not just the disease. In summer-related skin conditions, treatment is not based solely on the disease name. Instead, a patient’s overall physical symptoms, mental condition, lifestyle, and environmental factors are carefully evaluated before selecting a remedy. With proper assessment by an experienced homeopathic physician, improvement may be achieved.
Commonly considered homeopathic remedies include Sulphur, Rhus tox, Graphites, Arsenicum album, Natrum muriaticum, Calcarea carbonica, Hepar sulph, Mezereum, Sepia, Petroleum, Lycopodium, Belladonna, Apis mellifica, Cantharis, Borax, Mercurius sol, Calendula, Urtica urens, Dulcamara, and others. These are prescribed based on individual symptoms, severity, duration, and mental characteristics.
Caution
Avoid self-medication. Always consult a qualified and registered homeopathic physician to ensure proper treatment, reduce complications, and prevent unexpected risks.
Conclusion
In conclusion, summer skin diseases may seem common and trivial, but they should never be ignored. What starts as mild itching or rash can gradually become severe without proper care and treatment. Fungal and bacterial infections can spread and become chronic, affecting different parts of the body. In some cases, they may lead to fever, pus formation, pain, and secondary infections, disrupting daily life and potentially leading to serious complications.
These conditions are not limited to the skin alone; they can impact overall health. Prolonged suffering may lead to mental discomfort, sleep disturbances, and reduced self-confidence. Children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immunity are at higher risk.
Therefore, maintaining personal hygiene, keeping the body clean and dry, wearing loose cotton clothing, and staying well-hydrated are essential. Early consultation with a healthcare professional is crucial for effective management.
Ultimately, awareness, cleanliness, and timely treatment are the keys to preventing summer skin diseases and ensuring a healthy life.
