Recent Violence in Society and Mental Health: The Way Forward

Afifa Jahan Pushpo

Recent incidents of repression on women and children in the country have highlighted a growing crisis in the nation's mental well-being. Since August 5, there has been significant debate and criticism regarding the role of law enforcement agencies. The events throughout July sparked widespread frustration, fear, and despair, leading to violent reactions such as brutal killings, arson at police stations, and clashes with law enforcement.

Those who directly witnessed these incidents experienced firsthand the severity of the violence. Areas such as Jatrabari and Kuril saw disturbing scenes of unrest, making it seem as though human lives held no value. These events not only caused immediate fear but also left long-term psychological impacts on individuals. The younger generation, unfamiliar with the realities of war, suddenly found themselves exposed to a new kind of violence.

Many who participated in the protests, believing in their right to seek justice, never anticipated that demanding fair employment opportunities could be perceived as a grave offense. While they were prepared for demonstrations, the intensity of the backlash took a severe toll on their mental resilience. Such violent encounters reduce patience and tolerance in society, posing a long-term threat to social stability. The rise of mob justice following these incidents indicates a deeper crisis.

When individuals start taking the law into their own hands, it reflects a weakening trust in the judicial system. Innocent victims, such as Renu, have tragically lost their lives due to misinformation and mass panic. These incidents highlight the severe consequences of declining mental health and a lack of social awareness.

To address this crisis, it is crucial to prioritize national mental health services. Raising awareness, providing free counseling, and fostering a culture where seeking mental health support is normalized can help prevent individuals from resorting to violence. At the same time, ensuring responsible governance and strengthening the rule of law will help restore public trust in the justice system.

Building a healthy and balanced society requires a multi-faceted approach—improving mental health services, reinforcing family bonds, and restoring confidence in the judicial process. Without immediate action, the nation risks facing even more severe consequences in the future. Therefore, investing in mental well-being is not just a necessity but an urgent national priority.
