Rangpur AL leader Adv. Elias Ahmed dies

Former general secretary of Rangpur district Awami League and eminent lawyer, freedom fighter Ad.Elias Ahmed has passed away (Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Raziun).
He breathed his last while undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital on Sunday (January 29, 2023) around 3:30 pm. He was 72 years old at the time of his death. He is survived by numerous philanthropists including two sons.
The first funeral of Elias Ahmed held at Rangpur court premises at 11:30 am, the second funeral at Rangpur district Awami League office at 12 noon and the last funeral at Johor Kailash Ranjan High School ground. He was buried at the Shalbon Mistripara cemetery after the state honors. In 1967, this brave freedom fighter got involved in the politics of Chhatra League.
In 1970, he hoisted Bangladesh's independence flag in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office on March 2, 1971 when he was the VP of the Rangpur Government College Student Council and the leader of the Rangpur Division Chhatra League. Participated in the Great War of Liberation in 1971.
After independence, when Jubo League was formed under the leadership of late Fazlul Haque Moni, he took the responsibility of General Secretary of Rangpur District Jubo League. After 1975, he was accused in various cases.
In the same year, he assumed the responsibility of Jubo League President and District Awami League Jubo Secretary. In 2011, he served as the vice president of the district Awami League and later as the senior vice president.
The death of Elias Ahmed has cast a shadow of mourning among the political, social, cultural and professional organizations of Rangpur.
Sabbir Ahmed, General Secretary of Metropolitan Jasod, said, "The contribution of this senior leader in the political arena of Rangpur is undeniable. His emptiness is not to be filled.
He has played the role of a guardian with us in the anti-dictatorship and anti-communal movements since the Great War of Liberation. Rangpur District Awami League's former Joint General Secretary Motahar Hossain Mandal Mawla said, “We have lost another star in the political sky of Rangpur. Adv. During the time of Elias Ahmed, many leaders changed parties and accepted many positions with many privileges, but he served his duties faithfully as a mujib soldier.”
District Awami League former general secretary Ad. Rezaul Karim Raju said, “Adv. Elias Ahmed was our guardian. He has always stood by the transition of politics. We are speechless by losing him.”
Rangpur district Awami League joint convener Professor Majed Ali Babul said, "We have lost a guardian in politics. He will be exemplary to the politicians of this generation.”
