Rampage continues : Another farmer's paddy damaged by wild elephants in Jhenaigati
Khorshed Alam, Sherpur
In Jhenaigati of Sherpur, a herd of wild elephants devoured the stored paddy of another farmer named Mobarak Hossain on Monday night when over fifty wild elephants rampaged through Sandhyakura village of Nalakura Union in the upazila. Mobarak Hossain is the son of Motaleb Hossain from that village.
Locals reported that around midnight on Monday, a herd of over fifty wild elephants wreaked havoc in the Gomra and Sandhyakura areas. During this time, the elephants broke into the house of farmer Mobarak Hossain, destroying the bamboo fence and consuming 35 maunds of corn, 20 maunds of paddy, and 10 maunds of rice stored inside. They also trampled and ruined the supplies. The furniture in the house was smashed.
Over the past week, wild elephants from the Garo hills near the border have destroyed ten houses in the upazila and devoured stored paddy from farmers' barns. As the homes of these affected farmers are built on forest department land, they are not receiving any compensation. Consequently, the affected farmers are in severe distress.
Currently, the rampage of wild elephants continues in the hill villages of the upazila. As a result, the villagers are spending sleepless nights in fear. Confirming the incident, Madhutila Range Officer Deyan Ali said that families with houses built on forest land will not be eligible for compensation.
