Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has issued a notice banning rallies, meetings, or demonstrations adjoining the Bangladesh Secretariat and government residence of the chief adviser until further notice considering the recent situation.

This information was announced in a public notice signed by DMP Commissioner Md Mainul Hasan on Sunday night (25 August).

The notice said, “In order to maintain law and order in light of the recent developments, all types of meetings, gatherings, processions, rallies, demonstrations, etc., in the areas surrounding the Bangladesh Secretariat and the official residence of the Chief Advisor (Jamuna) are prohibited under the authority granted by Section 29 of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ordinance, effective from tomorrow (26 August) until further notice.”

It comes after several people were injured in a clash between Dhaka University students and a section of agitating Ansar members outside the Secretariat on Sunday night.

The clash started after 9 pm, following reports that key figures from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement including Sarjis Alam and Hasnat Abdullah were being held hostage by the Ansars at the Secretariat.

Earlier this month, the Ansar personnel intercepted the motorcade of Chief Adviser Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus to realise their demand.

On Sunday noon, the ansar members blocked the gates of the Secretariat to press home their demand. The protest turned into clashes with students and police. Army members had to intervene to bring the situation under control.
