Rafiqul to head Special Branch, 5 DIGs given acting additional IGP roles

Staff Correspondent

Gazipur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Khondaker Rafiqul Islam has been appointed as the new head of the Special Branch of police.

A deputy inspector general, Rafiqul will serve as the acting additional inspector general, or AIG, of the SB.

The home ministry has also given five other DIGs acting responsibilities as additional IGPs.

On Thursday, in the same order, DIG Mostafa Kamal from the same unit has been appointed the head of the Police Bureau of Investigation, or PBI, also with the acting rank of additional IGP.

These changes are part of a broader reshuffle in police force following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government after mass protests by students and citizens.

Three DIGs from the Police Headquarters, Akram Hossain, Abu Naser Mohammad Khaled, and Mosleh Uddin Ahmed, have been assigned acting roles as additional IGPs.

DIG Shibagat Ullah from the Industrial Police has been promoted to acting AIG within the same unit.

Rafiqul’s appointment as SB chief fills the vacancy left by Shah Alam, who retired earlier this month.

Former SB head Monirul Islam, a prominent figure in police, went into hiding after the government fell. Alam had been appointed in his place but was retired on Oct 2 after being promoted to additional IGP.
