The quota reform activists have called upon the authorities concerned to withdraw the case lodged against them alleging vandalism within the next 24 hours; otherwise, they will not shoulder the responsibility if any untoward situation takes place centering the issue.

“The government will be held responsible for any untoward situation if the case is not withdrawn within the next 24 hours,” the quota reform activists came up with the threat while addressing a press conference held in front of the Central Library of Dhaka University (DU) this evening.

No academic activities, including class and examination will be allowed until the demand is met, they said equivocally during the press conference.

Earlier on Friday night, Khalilur Rahman, a driver of the transport department of Rajarbagh Police Lines, filed a case with Shahbagh Police Station against unidentified students, blaming them for vandalising police vehicles during their ongoing protest at Shahbagh intersection.

According to the case document, a group of DU students gathered in front of the university's Central Library to protest the quota system around 4:40pm. Later, they reached Shahbagh intersection and began pelting break chips at policemen and police officials.

They also vandalised government property, including an armoured personnel carrier and a water cannon, added the case statement.

Meanwhile, a Dhaka court has fixed 21 August for submitting the investigation report of the case. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ali Haider Chowdhury accepted the first information report (FIR) and set the date for the report.
