The market is directly connected to people’s basic needs. A person’s daily expenses on food, clothing, transportation, healthcare, education and housing are all linked, in one way or another, to market prices. Therefore, when the prices of essential commodities rise faster than people’s income and purchasing power, the impact is not limited to household budgets. It also affects people’s lifestyle, mental well-being, nutrition, health and social relationships.
At present, market prices have become an important topic of discussion among ordinary people. A family may be able to purchase its essential goods with its income at the beginning of the month, but by the end of the month, the same income may no longer be sufficient to meet those needs as before. As a result, families are increasingly having to set priorities—deciding what must be purchased immediately, what can be postponed and which expenses need to be temporarily reduced or eliminated.
The pressure is greatest on low- and middle-income people. Compared with higher-income groups, they spend a larger proportion of their income on food and other basic necessities. When the price of a commodity rises, they have fewer opportunities to compensate by reducing spending in other areas. Consequently, the pressure of rising market prices is quickly reflected in their daily lives.
Market Prices Are Not Merely an Economic Issue
When discussing rising prices, we often view the issue solely from an economic perspective. In reality, however, it is a multidimensional social issue.
When food prices rise, a family may reduce the quantity of food it purchases, shift toward cheaper but less nutritious alternatives, or reduce its consumption of fish, meat, milk, fruits and other essential foods. If this continues for a long period, it may negatively affect household nutrition.
Similarly, when healthcare and medicine become more expensive, some families may postpone necessary treatment. If education-related expenses increase, families may reduce spending on additional education, books and other educational needs.
In other words, pressure from rising market prices can gradually affect people’s access to basic necessities and opportunities. Therefore, maintaining market stability is not merely a matter of consumer convenience; it is also closely connected with social security and public welfare.
Why Do Commodity Prices Rise?
It is not always realistic to blame a particular group whenever the price of a commodity increases. Multiple factors can influence prices. Production costs, raw-material prices, fuel and transportation expenses, import costs, foreign-exchange rates, international market conditions, seasonal supply, natural disasters, storage costs and consumer demand can all affect the market price of a product.
For commodities that depend heavily on imports, changes in international markets can quickly affect domestic prices. In the case of agricultural products, supply often depends on production seasons, weather conditions, transportation and storage facilities.
However, in addition to normal economic factors, market opacity, unreasonable stockpiling, artificial shortages and, in some cases, excessive profit-seeking can further complicate the situation. A Balance Is Needed Between Farmers and Consumers
One major question in the agricultural market is how much farmers receive for their products and how much consumers ultimately pay. Even when the price of a commodity remains low at the producer level, it can increase significantly by the time it passes through several intermediary stages and reaches the retail market.
If farmers do not receive a fair price compared with their production costs, their interest in producing the same commodity in the following season may decline. On the other hand, if consumers have to pay excessively high prices, their purchasing power comes under pressure.
Therefore, a market system is needed in which producers receive fair prices while consumers can purchase products at reasonable prices. For this purpose, greater direct connectivity between farmers and markets, improved storage facilities for agricultural products and more efficient transportation systems can play an important role.
Weak Storage Facilities Are a Major Problem
In Bangladesh, many agricultural products are produced abundantly during their respective seasons. However, due to inadequate storage facilities, producers may be forced to sell their products quickly. Later, when the season ends, supply may decline and prices may rise.
Expanding modern warehouses, cold-storage facilities and other storage infrastructure could help address part of this problem. This would reduce the amount of produce wasted while also making it easier to maintain a continuous supply in the market.
Technology Should Be Used in Market Monitoring
Market monitoring cannot rely solely on occasional drives or inspections. It is necessary to regularly collect and analyze information on the prices of products at different stages, identify where abnormal price increases are occurring and determine where supply chains are being disrupted.
A technology-based market information system could make it possible to monitor price changes from production to retail. This would enable the relevant authorities to take action before an abnormal situation becomes more serious.
At the same time, the results of market monitoring should be presented to the public transparently. This can reduce rumors and enable consumers to make decisions based on accurate information.
Market Drives Should Be Regular and Accountable
Market inspections and enforcement drives may be necessary to address irregularities and protect consumers. However, such drives should not be limited to temporary reactions. A lasting degree of discipline must be established through regular monitoring, identification of irregularities and proper enforcement of the law.
At the same time, it would not be appropriate to view all businesses in the same way. Most traders conduct their businesses in accordance with established rules. Action should be taken against those who engage in irregularities based on evidence. This will also help honest businesses operate in a fair and competitive environment.

Consumers have an important role to play in market management. Purchasing excessive quantities of a product because of rumors of a shortage can create temporary pressure on the market. Therefore, consumers should verify information through reliable sources rather than relying on rumors.
When purchasing products, consumers should check the price, weight, quality, production date and expiry date. If they encounter excessive pricing, underweight products, adulteration or other irregularities, they should inform the appropriate authorities.
The more aware consumers become, the less opportunity there will be for irregular practices.
The Impact of Rumors on Social Media
In the present era, information about the price or shortage of a particular product can spread rapidly through social media. If the information is accurate, it can contribute to public awareness. However, unverified information can create unnecessary panic in the market.
Therefore, responsibility is essential when sharing market-related information. Relevant authorities should publish accurate information quickly. At the same time, news organizations and social-media users should also avoid spreading unverified information.
Rising Prices Are Changing People’s Food Habits
One important consequence of rising prices is changes in food habits. When household income is limited, people may turn to cheaper foods instead of relatively expensive nutritious foods. Although such foods may provide sufficient calories, they may not always provide the nutrients the body needs.
A balanced diet is particularly important for children, adolescents, pregnant women and older people. Therefore, food prices and nutrition cannot be considered separately.
Public awareness can be increased regarding affordable and nutritious locally available foods for low-income families. Reducing food waste and increasing the use of seasonal local foods can also help households manage their expenses to some extent.
Increasing Production Is Essential for Market Stability
In the long term, there is no alternative to increasing production capacity if market prices are to remain stable. Where products can be produced domestically, opportunities should be created to increase production.
Providing farmers with quality seeds, technology, training and necessary support can help increase productivity.
At the same time, excessive dependence on imports for certain commodities can allow shocks in international markets to reach domestic consumers quickly. Therefore, balanced policies are needed in production, imports and stock management.
Transparency of Market Information Must Be Increased
If consumers do not have sufficient information about the actual price of a product, their ability to negotiate and make informed purchasing decisions is reduced. Therefore, mechanisms can be developed to make daily or regular market prices of essential commodities easily accessible.
Providing market-price information through digital platforms, mobile applications, websites, mass media and local information centers could benefit ordinary people.
In addition, transparent information about the difference between wholesale and retail prices would make it easier to identify abnormalities in the market.
Not Only Prices, but Purchasing Power Also Matters
Another important issue should be remembered when discussing market prices: the income and purchasing power of people are just as important as the prices of goods.
Even if the price of a commodity remains unchanged, it can become unaffordable if people’s incomes decline.
Therefore, employment, income, productivity and social protection are also connected with economic policy. To sustainably improve people’s standard of living, opportunities for income generation and employment must be expanded alongside effective market management.
Building a Stable Market Requires Collective Efforts
The market is not controlled by any single institution. Producers, importers, wholesalers, retailers, transporters, government agencies and consumers are all part of the market system. Therefore, maintaining market stability also requires collective efforts.
The government’s responsibility is to ensure effective policies, adequate monitoring, a competitive environment and proper enforcement of laws.
Businesses have a responsibility to operate with ethics, transparency and fairness. Consumers, on the other hand, should purchase goods responsibly, reduce waste and take lawful action against irregularities.Conclusion
