Prices to decline automatically if eating of polished rice habit is stopped: Food minister

Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder has called upon the consumers to refrain from consuming polished rice, saying that doing so would lead to an automatic decrease in prices of staple food.
“We’re halting the rice polishing process by adopting a new law. We’ve also stopped marketing rice under various names like miniket. To consumers, I emphasise avoid consuming shiny rice. This will lower rice prices and enhance our ability to export,” he said.
The minister said this while addressing an opening ceremony of an international exhibition at the International Convention City Bashundhara (ICCB) in the capital Dhaka on Thursday.
After polishing, rice retains no other nutrients except carbohydrates," he stated, highlighting that the polishing process incurs costs for electricity and labor wages, ultimately contributing to the overall price of rice.
