Staff Correspondent

Inspector General of Police Mainul Islam has announced that a crackdown on crimes such as snatching, drug offences, extortion, and traffic mismanagement will commence after the Durga Puja celebrations.

Speaking after visiting the Ramakrishna Mission Puja pavilion in Dhaka on Saturday afternoon, the IGP said: “More than 32,000 Puja pavilions are being celebrated across the country. Special security measures have been taken to ensure the festivities proceed peacefully.”

He added that nearly 225,000 Ansar members have been deployed across Bangladesh, with 75,000 police personnel directly involved in security operations.

Armed forces have also been stationed nationwide for added security, he said.

The IGP noted that Durga Puja would conclude on Sunday with the immersion ceremony, for which special security measures have been put in place.

“Our national emergency service, 999, remains operational round-the-clock. Immediate action is being taken for any Puja-related reports,” he said.

So far, 43 incidents have been reported across the country in connection with Puja festivities, Mainul said, adding, “Immediate steps were taken in each case. Fourteen cases were filed, 29 general diaries were recorded, and 26 individuals have been arrested.”

Responding to a question, the police chief said: “Whoever the criminal is, they will be brought under the law. No one will be spared, regardless of political affiliations.”
