Md. Lablu Sheikh, Lalmonirhat
A complaint has been filed against five individuals for allegedly spraying poisonous pesticides on a farmer’s jute field in Lalmonirhat
Due to a land-related dispute in the Kalakhaowa area of Barobari Union, Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila, a poor farmer named Mozammel Haque (55) has accused these individuals of destroying his one-acre jute field.
The affected farmer has filed a written complaint against the five local residents at Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station.
According to the complaint, farmer Mozammel Haque has been cultivating his ancestral land for the past two years. This season, he cultivated Tosha variety jute on the land. On the afternoon of June 6, he visited the field and returned home. The next morning, when he went to the field, he found all the jute plants wilted and scorched. He later inspected the site with several local dignitaries.
The affected farmer claims that the opponents sprayed an excessive amount of poisonous pesticides under the cover of night, destroying the jute plants. He estimates the damage to be around 1.6 lakh taka.
The complaint names the accused as Ekramul Haque (36), Rafiqul Islam (38), Khoka Mamud (57), Asadul (32), and Maidul Islam (30), all residents of the same area.
The complaint further states that the opponents are attempting to forcibly take possession of the land and have also threatened Mozammel Haque’s life. The land is located in Kalakhaowa Mauza, under Khatian No. 207, Plot Nos. 117 and 114, totaling 100 decimals, according to the farmer’s claim.
A field visit revealed that the entire jute field has been scorched. While some plants have partial leaves, there is no hope of any production from them.
The accused individuals refused to comment on the matter.
The affected farmer Mozammel Haque said, “I had planted the crop with great effort. Yet, the opponents destroyed my hard-earned crop. I have filed a complaint at the police station. Now I want proper justice.”
Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station OC Nurnabi said, the complaint has been initially accepted. Necessary legal action will be taken after the investigation is completed.”
