Poet Nazrul's life in Cumilla

Zakir Azad

The name of Cumilla covers a large chapter of the life of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, a symbol of love, humanity and equality.

Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam has an inseparable relationship with Comilla city and Daulatpur of Muradnagar upazila. Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam stayed in Comilla for 11 months in five stages from April 1921 to January 1924.

During this time he was arrested while doing anti-British agitation. He used to hang out in various houses and educational institutions here. He practiced music and recited poetry. He used to write songs and poems. Nargis and Pramila are the two outstanding women in the poet's life; He also got them from Cumilla . Researchers think that Kazi Nazrul became a rebel of Islam from this Cumilla .

He was arrested and imprisoned for taking part in the anti-British movement in Cumilla.

Due to the numerous stories of the poet's life and the relevance of his works, the common people of Cumilla did not get to know about him. The number of information about poet Nazrul that reaches the common people of Cumilla from research books or discussions on special days is very few. The biographies and notable works of the rebel poet are associated with various places and persons of Cumilla-a special field and a class of Buddhist people.

Nazrul researcher Prof. Shantiranjan Bhowmik said that there is a need for a detailed discussion on the relevance of each of the writings of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam in Cumilla . Which will be easily accessible to common people.
Meanwhile, the Nazrul Institute Center is being run by the government in Cumilla for detailed research and preservation activities on the work and biography of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. Collected and annotated works, biography and important moments of the national poet are preserved there. Officially, the memorials of the poet have been preserved in Cumilla city and Muradnagar upazila.

It is known that the first of the two life partners of the national poet is Nargis Asar Khanam, the niece of Ali Akbar Khan of Khanbari, Daulatpur village of Muradnagar upazila of Cumilla, and the other is Ashalata Sengupta Duli, the daughter of Vasant Kumar Sengupta of Cumilla city.

But the poet named her Pramila. On November 21, 1921, the poet took part in the anti-British procession at Rajganj Bazar. He was arrested from there. On November 23, 1922, the poet was arrested from the south side of the road at the end of the Jhowtala road in the city for his poem 'Anandamayi Ananda'.

It is learnt from the writings of the researcher Shantiranjan Bhowmik that the first time the national poet was in mid-April 1921 was 3/4 days and 17 days back from Daulatpur. That is, from 19 June 1921 to 7 July. Left for Kolkata with Comrade Muzaffar Ahmad on July 8.

He came for the second time in November 1921 and left at the end of December. He was there for about a month. The third time came in February 1922 and left in June.

This time he stayed for a long time. like four months. The fourth time came in October 1922, he was arrested on 23 November and the police sent him to Calcutta. It was less than a month. For the fifth time, on December 15, 1923, after being released from Baharampur Jail, he moved directly to Cumilla . It is not known when he left. But while leaving, Giribala took Devi and Pramila to Kolkata.

When he came for the third time (1922) during his stay of nine months in the city of Cumilla and stayed for four months, Nazrul Islam's presence and various activities were remarkable. Prior to his second visit in November 1921, there were nationwide strikes and riots to protest the Prince of Wales' arrival in India.

Encouraged by this, Nazrul Islam composed the song 'Jagarani' and composed the melody and went round the streets of Cumilla with a procession and was detained in the police station for a short time. Since then Nazrul Islam became well known in Cumilla. Later arrival and four months stay in 1922 was important for Cumilla and Nazrul. He came for the fourth time with an arrest warrant on his head with the intention of hiding and was also arrested in Cumilla . The fifth arrival is personal.

Professor Shantiranjan Bhowmik also mentions in his writing, nine months stay at Indrakumar Sengupta's house in Kandirpara and friendship with every member and especially Nazrul-Pramila issue, Congress leader Basantkumar Majumdar and Hemprabha Devi's stay at Kandirpara house.

Nazrul Islam's visit to Nabadwip Devavarman's house in Chartha and its relevance, Janu Mia Saheb's frequent visits to Daroga house in Cumilla and Maulvipara, meeting and spending time with Satyendranath Bose, the founder of Comilla Victoria College, Nazrul Islam was arrested twice for political reasons and writing poetry to displease the British government.

This happened in Cumilla . Both an important discussion of the historical period in which he was arrested and a more simple contextual discussion of the poet's literary practice and writings at that time require research.
