“Those who were martyred during the July mass uprising wanted to bring a change to the country – a change through which people’s basic needs and rights will be established and they could at least live in peace,” he said.

The Prime Minister was speaking at a ceremony at the Cabinet meeting room of the Secretariat in the afternoon, where members of the families of Bangladesh Scouts members killed during the July mass uprising were honoured and provided with financial assistance.

He said no one has the ability to repay the debt owed to the martyrs for their sacrifice, said a press release issued by the Prime Minister’s Press Wing.

“Those who were martyred gave their lives while fighting for a noble cause. To ensure due respect for their sacrifice, it is not enough merely to remember them. Each of us who are still alive must work for the country from our respective positions,” Tarique Rahman said.

Addressing Bangladesh Scouts, he urged its members to work for the country and its people and develop a spirit of standing beside people and protecting nature.

The Prime Minister also called upon them to inspire others to work for the welfare of the people.

At the programme, 10 families of Bangladesh Scouts members killed during the July mass uprising were given special honours.

Tarique Rahman also handed over cheques for financial assistance and medals of honour to the families of the martyrs.

Bangladesh Scouts President and Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani called for the contributions and sacrifices of those killed during the July mass uprising to be incorporated into the national curriculum so that their role could be passed on to future generations.

Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon, State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj, Prime Minister’s Adviser Dr Mahdi Amin, and family members of the July uprising martyrs were present at the event.
