Pirojpur Liberation Day was December 8. On this day in 1971, this district of Barishal division was liberated from the Pakistani invaders.

On that day, the red and green victory flag flew in every house in the district. During the Liberation War, Pirojpur was under the leadership of Major (Retd.) Ziauddin Ahmed, Commander of the Sundarbans Sub-Sector under the 9th Sector. The first Pakistani army entered Pirojpur on May 4, 1971.

On the way from the Hularhat naval port, the entrance to the city, the invading army first started the massacre in the villages of Machimpur and Krishnanagar. After that, for eight months, with the help of local peace committee leaders and Razakars, they set fire to the houses of minorities and people in favor of independence in different areas. Freedom-seeking people were killed.

To liberate Pirojpur from the invaders, a group of brave freedom fighters led by Major (Retd.) Ziauddin Ahmed, the Sub-Sector Commander of Sundarbans, entered the city through the Parerhat port of Pirojpur at around 10 pm on December 7.

On receiving the news of the arrival of the freedom fighters, the enemy fled towards Barisal through the Kanchanadi river east of the city. Earlier, when the Pak army attacked the fort built by the freedom fighters in Guara Bagan in the Kuriana area of Swarupkathi, many Pakistani soldiers were killed by the freedom fighters. In addition, the enemies were defeated by the guerrilla attacks of the freedom fighters at various places.

Before leaving the city, they looted the Pirojpur National Bank and took away the money and gold deposited there.

To commemorate this day, various educational institutions, social and cultural organizations laid wreaths at the Shahi Smriti Stambh since Sunday morning.
