Bangladesh National Parliament Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury MP said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken important steps to make parliamentary standing committees effective. As a result, parliamentary committees can play an important role in ensuring accountability of the government.

She made the statements as the chief guest at the inauguration of the two-day 'Workshop on Financial Oversight Committees (FOCS) and Comprehensive Information Management System (CMIS) of the National Parliament, jointly organised by the National Parliament Secretariat and the European Union at Sarah Resort in Gazipur on Sunday.

Chief Whip of Jatiya Sangsad Noor-e-Alam Chowdhury MP and Head of Delegation of European Union to Bangladesh Charles Wheatley delivered speeches as special guests in the event.

The workshop was presided over by KM Abdus Salam, senior secretary of the National Parliament Secretariat, and moderated by MA Kamal Billah while DT Global's chief expert Dr Khandkar Golam Moazzem delivered the introductory speech.

Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury said that the Standing Committee on Government Accounts, the Standing Committee on Government Institutions and the Standing Committee on Estimated Accounts perform very important duties. Therefore, the members of this committee and the officials of the parliament secretariat related to the committee need higher training.

She further said that if the committee members make important suggestions through the constructive discussion of this workshop, measures will be taken to implement them.

Feroze MP, President of the Standing Committee on Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism R.M. Ubaidul Moktadir Chowdhury MP, President of the Standing Committee on Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Wasika Ayesha Khan MP, Ahsanul Islam Titu MP, Ahsan Adelur Rahman MP, Khadijatul Anwar MP, A. K. M. Rezaul Karim Tansen MP, Manjur Hossain MP, AB Tajul Islam MP, Omar Farooq Chowdhury MP, Muhammad Nazrul Islam MPs along with related officials of European Union, DT Global and National Parliament Secretariat were present.
