Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain warned that no warning sign or symptom of heart disease should ever be ignored, noting that cardiovascular conditions remain the leading cause of death among non-communicable diseases nationwide.
The Health Minister made these remarks as the chief guest during a discussion organized by the Bangladesh Cardiac Society at Hotel InterContinental in Dhaka on Tuesday, to mark World Heart Day 2026. Professor Dr. Mohammad Shafiuddin, Convener of the Bangladesh Cardiac Society, presided over the meeting.
He said that although citizens understand the importance of health awareness, many fail to apply it in daily life—a tendency that poses severe risks when it comes to heart care.
Highlighting the contribution of medical professionals, the minister praised physicians and healthcare workers for their selfless dedication during critical times, including the COVID-19 pandemic, dengue outbreaks, and natural disasters.
Director General of the Directorate General of Medical Education Prof Dr. Md. Nazmul Hasan and Assistant Personal Physician to the Prime Minister Dr. A N M Monowarul Kadir attended the event as special guests, while Dr. A F Kabir Uddin Ahmed supervised the program overall.
Earlier in the day, the Health Minister officially inaugurated World Heart Day by releasing balloons on the premises of the Super Specialized Hospital under Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) and leading a rally to raise public awareness about cardiovascular health.
