NGO Platform calls for sustained solidarity as Rohingya response nears decade

Staff Correspondent

The NGO Platform in Cox’s Bazar has called for sustained international solidarity, stronger community leadership and investment in resilience and host communities as the Rohingya humanitarian response approaches its tenth year.

The call came at a high-level roundtable titled “Towards Ten Years of Solidarity: From Emergency Response to Sustainable Solutions,” held in Cox’s Bazar on Wednesday, bringing together government representatives, Rohingya community leaders, host-community representatives, UN agencies, donors, local, national and international NGOs, civil society and other humanitarian stakeholders.

The dialogue focused on lessons from nine years of humanitarian response, the most urgent needs of Rohingya refugees and host communities, and ways to move from a prolonged humanitarian crisis towards sustainable solutions.

Participants stressed the need for stronger collective efforts to address the evolving challenges and explored priorities for strengthening the dignity, resilience and agency of affected communities.

They also discussed how humanitarian, development and other actors could work together to move beyond short-term emergency response towards longer-term crisis management.

A key message from the roundtable was that solutions should be shaped with affected communities rather than only for them.

The participation of Rohingya representatives and host-community leaders alongside government authorities, NGOs, UN agencies and development partners helped bring community perspectives into discussions on future priorities.

The roundtable featured two strategic sessions. The first focused on current needs and priorities and brought together Rohingya community representatives, NGOs, civil society, host-community leaders and media representatives.

The second session brought government and UN representatives into a forward-looking discussion on resilience, collective action and durable solutions.

Participants also highlighted the need to maintain international attention and solidarity while strengthening the dignity, resilience and agency of affected communities.

As the response approaches the ten-year milestone, the NGO Platform called for stronger localisation and community leadership, greater investment in resilience and host communities, and continued collective efforts towards durable solutions that uphold the rights, safety and dignity of Rohingya refugees.

The discussion also underscored the importance of keeping the aspirations of Rohingya children and young people at the centre of future strategies, particularly their access to protection, education, skills and meaningful opportunities.

The dialogue concluded with a shared recognition that the Rohingya crisis remains a collective responsibility involving governments, humanitarian and development actors, donors, civil society, host communities and Rohingya communities.

“As we move towards ten years of the Rohingya response, our responsibility is not only to reflect on what we have achieved, but to ask what must change. We need to protect the dignity and aspirations of Rohingya communities, continue investing in affected host communities, and keep international solidarity alive while collectively pursuing sustainable and durable solutions,” the Platform said.

Hosted by Plan International Bangladesh since May 2026, the NGO Platform currently represents 182 local, national and international NGOs working in the Rohingya response.
