National consensus a must in power handover process: Adviser Nahid

Staff Correspondent

Nahid Islam, an adviser to the interim government, has underscored the need to reach a national consensus in the process of handing over the state power in a democratic manner.

“Ensuring the handover of power through a democratic process is the need of the time. We must reach a national consensus in this regard,” Nahid Islam, an adviser for Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, said on Friday.

He made the remark during a dialogue titled “Unity, Reform, and Elections” organised by the Forum for Bangladesh Studies at the Krishibid Institute in the Khamarbari area of Dhaka on Friday.

The country’s overall situation will remain stable if the process of handing over the state power is ensured through a democratic process, he said.

Claiming that the process was undemocratic during the rule of the ousted Awami League government, he said that the reforms once demanded by BNP and other political parties are now being acknowledged as necessary by the incumbent government as well.

Fascism has been materialised in the country due to the extreme dependency on the bureaucracy, Nahid said endorsing the shortcomings of his government.

“The day of politics of confrontation has come to an end. Now, we need a process that will ensure peace and stability during the transition of power through the national consensus,” he added.
