Nakla upazila of Sherpur district was freed on December 9, 1971 by defeating the occupation forces of Pakistan. On this day in 1971, country's freedom fighters, in collaboration with the Indian Allied Forces, liberated the Nakla upazila of the border district Sherpur through Pakistani armed struggle.

They dispersed the Pakistani forces and liberated the Nakla area under Sector 11 during the war and flew the flag of victory. According to sources, during the war of liberation, Major Riaz was in charge of the Pak Army Headquarters Ahmed Ali High School in Sector 11, north of the Brahmaputra River. Thousands of people were made homeless by burning houses in Nakla, the main target of the invading forces killed hundreds of freedom loving youths. 19 heroic freedom fighters were martyred.

More than 300 freedom fighters including 2-IC Abdur Rashid and security officer Eklim Shah took part in the battle on the initiative of Banajit Singh Tyagi and Brigadier Sanatan Singh in collaboration with the Allied forces and under the leadership of Company Commander Abdul Haque Chowdhury, although the invaders retreated. 130 local collaborators were captured by the freedom fighters. The next day, 117 Razakars and Al-Badars surrendered to the company commander with 110 weapons. The flag of independent Bangladesh was officially hoisted on the grounds of Nakla Pilot High School (Nakla Govt Pilot High School) at 11 am on this day.

At that time Major Banajit Singh Tyagi of the Allied Forces, Lieutenant Cornel Abu Taher, Company Commanders Abdul Haque Chowdhury and Gias Uddin, EPR Wireless Operator Farhad Hossain, Nakla Platoon Commanders Nurul Islam Hiru, Nalitabari Platoon Commanders Jamru Uddin, Sherpur Platoon Commanders AB Siddik, Quartermaster Julhas Uddin Fakir, Abul Hashem freedom fighters of intelligence department and thousands of peoples were present. Thus Nakla was freed without shedding a drop of blood.

Until 2023, the day was commemorated every year with due respect through preparatory meetings and various programs organized by the Upazila Administration, local political parties and other organizations. However, according to various sources, no preparatory meetings or official programs have been arranged this year for unknown reasons.
