Must build new Bangladesh under Tarique Rahman's leadership: Annie

Water Resources Minister Md. Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie MP said, the country must unite under the leadership of Tarique Rahman to build a new Bangladesh, completing the vision of late President Ziaur Rahman and the unfulfilled works of Begum Khaleda Zia.
He made the remarks as the chief guest on the sixth day of the Zia Smriti Book Fair-2026, organized by the Zia Smriti Library at the Bangla Academy premises to mark the 48th founding anniversary of the BNP on Tuesday.
Speaking at the event, Water Resources Minister Annie described Ziaur Rahman as a visionary leader who significantly elevated Bangladesh's international standing and image during his tenure. He highlighted President Zia's role as the founder of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), created to foster friendly relations among South Asian nations, and recalled his contributions as the proclaimer of independence and an active freedom fighter who sought to rebuild the nation in line with the spirit of the Liberation War.
Commenting on political decorum, Annie emphasized that offensive and unparliamentary language has no place in politics.
Chaired by Dhaka Metro South BNP Joint Convener A N M Saiful Islam, the discussion was addressed by Gopalganj-1 Member of Parliament Salimuzzaman Salim, Independence Award and Ekushey Padak recipient Professor Dr. Sukomal Barua, and BNP National Executive Committee Member Fazlur Rahman Khokon, among others.
