A housewife named Luluyan Marjan Hira (17) has reportedly died following physical abuse over dowry demands in Hnila, Teknaf, Cox's Bazar.

The victim's family claims that since her marriage, demands for a dowry of five lakh taka had been made, and as she refused to comply, she was physically assaulted. They allege that the in-laws are now attempting to frame the incident as a suicide.

According to Teknaf Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Muhammad Gias Uddin, the body was recovered from her in-laws' residence in Rozarghona area of Ward No. 1 under Hnila Union early Wednesday around 4:00 AM.

The deceased, Luluyan Marjan Hira, was the daughter of Master Mir Kashem from Purbo Sikderpara in Hnila, Teknaf.

Her elder sister, Afroza Akhter, stated that Luluyan was in a romantic relationship with Abbas Uddin (22), son of Nur Ahmad from Rozarghona in Moulvibazar, Hnila. On January 19 of this year, the two eloped and got married without their families' consent. Shortly after the marriage, Abbas allegedly began demanding a dowry of five lakh taka from his wife, leading to repeated quarrels between them. Afroza alleged that on Tuesday night, Abbas physically assaulted Marjan, which led to her death.

She further alleged that Abbas and his family subjected Marjan to various forms of torture and physical abuse, ultimately causing her death. Now, in an attempt to save themselves, they are spreading rumors that she committed suicide. Preparations are underway to file a case over the incident.

The victim's brother-in-law, Nurul Islam, said, “Late Tuesday night, Abbas’s elder brother called me to inform me that my sister-in-law had committed suicide. Later, in the early hours of Wednesday, police recovered Marjan’s body from her in-laws' residence. The process of filing a case is ongoing.”

OC Muhammad Gias Uddin said, upon receiving the information early Wednesday, a police team visited the scene. The body was recovered from a room at her in-laws’ house, where it was found hanging.
